Which paper do you need?

Edexcel GCSE Mathematics 1MA1 has three papers at each tier. Each lasts 90 minutes and carries 80 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator; Papers 2 and 3 allow a calculator. All three papers in an exam entry use the same tier.

Foundation (F) covers grades 1–5. Higher (H) targets grades 4–9, with an allowed grade 3. Use the tier your teacher has entered you for; a Higher paper is not a substitute for a Foundation mock score.

A label such as 2H means Paper 2, Higher tier. Choose the matching 2H mark scheme from that same year and series. Ask your teacher which formula sheet and exam arrangements apply to your exam year.

Structure checked against Pearson’s 1MA1 specification (PDF) on 27 October 2026. For newly released resources and current notices, use Pearson’s official course materials.

Turn a paper into better revision

  1. Choose the attempt. Use exam timing for a full mock, or label a shorter topic attempt clearly. Keep the mark scheme closed until you have tried the questions.
  2. Mark the working. Match the exact year, series, paper and tier. Record the step that lost a mark: for example, a sign error, an unjustified model or a missing conclusion. Use the examiner report to understand common difficulties.
  3. Repair and retest. Revisit the relevant lesson, redo the missed method without copying, then try a fresh question. A corrected answer is useful feedback; it is not a new unseen-paper score.
