Computing choices can distribute benefits and burdens unevenly. Develop a contextual argument about affected people, including those excluded by the interface or by the assumptions behind a service.
What you'll be able to do
A character set must represent the writing needed by users, while an encoding and font must preserve and display it correctly. ASCII alone cannot support the required worldwide repertoire. Interface layout should also accommodate the script’s writing direction and mixed-direction content rather than assuming every user reads left to right. Test with representative text and users.
Colours and symbols can have different associations across contexts and cultures; do not assume a universal interpretation from one designer’s experience. Pair a colour-coded status with clear text or another useful cue so that meaning does not depend on distinguishing colours alone. Sufficient contrast, keyboard access, understandable error messages and adaptable text size can affect who can use the service.
Automation can remove repetitive work, increase throughput and create new technical roles, while also displacing tasks or requiring retraining. Evaluate employees, employers and service users separately. Automated decisions and AI can make decisions more consistently under a rule, but biased data, unsuitable objectives or unequal error costs can still produce harmful outcomes. A route to review an important decision matters.
Monitoring behaviour and analysing personal information can support safety or planning but can also reveal sensitive patterns and change people’s freedom to act. Identify collection, retention, access and challenge mechanisms. Environmental effects include manufacturing, energy, replacement and disposal; a digital alternative reducing paper does not establish that its whole lifecycle has lower impact. Avoid claims about exact emissions without a relevant source and boundary.
Censorship or content restrictions can reduce exposure to harmful material, yet can also suppress legitimate expression or disproportionately affect some groups. Explain who defines the rule, who applies it, how mistakes are challenged and whether the measure is proportionate to its intended purpose. A keyword filter can misclassify both innocent and harmful messages depending on context.
Piracy can harm creators’ control and income and can expose users to untrustworthy distributions, while lawful access and affordability remain relevant policy questions. Offensive communication can harm recipients, but assessment of context and consistent enforcement matter. A strong extended response uses the scenario, explains a mechanism and consequence for specific stakeholders, weighs a feasible alternative and reaches a justified conclusion. Merely counting advantages and disadvantages does not establish their importance.
Attempt the task before opening its worked response. Record each change of state, explain the rule used, and check the result against the original requirements. Code examples labelled Python 3 use that language’s conventions; pseudocode states its own assumptions.
