An equation like has one answer. An inequality like has infinitely many: every number less than 4. Solving inequalities uses the same steps as solving equations, with a single extra rule that catches almost everyone at least once — and the answers are shown on number lines, as lists of integers, or as shaded regions on a graph.
The big picture
Adding, subtracting, and multiplying or dividing by a positive number all keep an inequality true. Multiplying or dividing by a number reverses the order of numbers — but — so the inequality sign must flip.
Edexcel asks for inequalities in several forms: solve and show on a number line (Foundation and Higher), list the integers satisfying a double inequality, and at Higher tier identify or shade a region defined by several inequalities on a coordinate grid.

Test a point not on the line, such as the origin, to decide which side satisfies the inequality.

Tip — When counting integer points, check each boundary: points on a dashed line do not count, points on a solid line do.
