A reflected pulse measures a round-trip travel time. Distinguish locating a boundary from resolving two nearby boundaries, and explain how wavelength and pulse duration limit the information.
What you'll be able to do
A transducer sends a short pulse and later detects a reflection from a boundary. If the propagation speed is c and the echo delay is t, the pulse has travelled distance 2d, so the boundary is d=ct/2 away. Use the speed in the actual medium and convert microseconds correctly.
A boundary can transmit some wave energy and reflect some; a detectable echo does not mean that the whole pulse is reflected. Different interfaces can create successive echoes. Match each delay to the correct travel path, particularly when the pulse crosses more than one material.
Two close boundaries return pulses whose arrival times differ only slightly. If each pulse lasts longer than that difference, the echoes overlap. The two boundaries may then appear as one broad response even though the timing instrument is precise.
For a pulse of duration Δt in one medium, a useful separation scale is cΔt/2. This is a simple model of overlap, not a universal instrument specification. A pulse containing n cycles at frequency f lasts about n/f; raising frequency can shorten it if cycle count stays the same.
A wave cannot generally distinguish arbitrarily fine structure compared with its wavelength. Since λ=c/f, higher-frequency ultrasound has a shorter wavelength and can provide finer detail under suitable conditions. This is a separate point from timing resolution, although practical pulse design links them.
Shorter wavelength can come with stronger attenuation in a medium, reducing penetration and the return signal. Choose a frequency that balances detail, depth and signal quality. Longer averaging may improve noisy measurements, but it does not by itself separate two echoes that the pulse shape cannot resolve.
