A software recommendation needs a task, constraints and a reasoned comparison. Distinguish what the program does from the licence under which people may inspect or change its source.
What you'll be able to do
Application software performs user-oriented tasks. A spreadsheet can support calculations and small tabular analyses; a database application can manage structured records and controlled queries; a word processor supports document editing. Specialist software addresses a narrower domain such as a particular scientific modelling task. Choose functions that match the scenario rather than naming a familiar product without explanation.
Compare data volume, concurrent users, validation, audit needs, compatibility, accessibility, training and ongoing support. A custom application may fit unusual requirements closely but introduces development and maintenance work. A ready-made product can be deployed sooner, but may require adapting the workflow or accepting features and limits outside the original requirements.
Utilities support the operation or maintenance of a computer system. Examples include backup, compression, file management, security scanning and storage diagnostics. A utility does not become an ordinary end-user application simply because it has a graphical interface. Classify the main responsibility described in the question.
Consider how the underlying medium affects the recommendation. Rearranging fragmented file blocks can reduce mechanical disk seeking, but the same physical-seek justification does not apply to solid-state storage. Backup and recovery also require a retention and restoration plan; displaying “backup complete” does not by itself prove the files can be recovered when needed.
Open-source licensing provides permissions to inspect, use, modify and redistribute software under the licence’s conditions. Closed-source suppliers generally retain control of source access and modification. Open source does not mean no copyright, no licence obligations, no support or necessarily zero purchase cost. Closed source is not automatically more secure or easier to use.
For developers, open collaboration can attract contributions and scrutiny, while business models may rely on support or services. Closed-source control can support a proprietary sales model and consistent product direction. For users, assess maintenance responsibility, support arrangements, interoperability and ability to inspect or adapt the program. Available source only helps an organisation fix problems if it has the skills and permission to do so.
Attempt the task before opening its worked response. Record each change of state, explain the rule used, and check the result against the original requirements. Code examples labelled Python 3 use that language’s conventions; pseudocode states its own assumptions.
