Operating systems provide services and manage resources. Their classifications overlap, so choose and justify the properties a scenario needs rather than memorising one exclusive label per device.
What you'll be able to do
An operating system manages resources such as processor time, memory, files and devices, controls access and provides services through which programs use the machine. Multitasking shares execution resources between tasks; multi-user support adds management and protection for several users. One system can provide both properties.
An embedded system is built into a device for a particular purpose and may use an embedded OS. A real-time system must meet specified response deadlines; high average speed alone is insufficient. A distributed OS coordinates resources across connected machines and can present a more unified system. These classifications overlap: an embedded controller may have real-time requirements, while a distributed service may also serve multiple users.
In the traditional BIOS model, firmware starts when the machine powers on, performs initial checks and hardware setup, identifies bootable storage and transfers control to boot code that loads the operating system. The precise sequence depends on the platform. Many modern computers use UEFI firmware; retain the BIOS model named by OCR while recognising that it is not the only implementation.
A device driver supplies hardware-specific communication between the operating system and a device. It translates suitable OS requests into operations the device understands and handles relevant responses. An application should normally use the OS interface rather than contain separate low-level control code for every printer model. A driver is software; the physical interface and the device remain necessary.
A system virtual machine provides a software-managed machine environment in which a guest operating system runs. A hypervisor manages guest access to underlying resources. Benefits can include running different environments, isolation and repeatable testing; costs include resource overhead, configuration effort and contention between guests. Isolation depends on implementation and configuration, not the word virtual alone.
A process virtual machine or runtime executes an intermediate representation for an individual program, such as bytecode. It can support portability across platforms that provide a compatible runtime. The runtime is still implemented for a real host and may interpret or compile code. A bytecode runtime does not necessarily contain a second complete operating system. Explain which meaning is intended before comparing memory or startup costs.
Attempt the task before opening its worked response. Record each change of state, explain the rule used, and check the result against the original requirements. Code examples labelled Python 3 use that language’s conventions; pseudocode states its own assumptions.
