Distinguish working memory, persistent startup instructions and remotely provided storage. Similar names do not make virtual storage and virtual memory the same mechanism.
What you'll be able to do
RAM holds instructions and data actively used by a running system. Ordinary main RAM is volatile: its contents are lost when power is removed. Random access means locations can be addressed directly; it does not mean that the system selects data unpredictably. Capacity affects how much active working data can remain in memory.
ROM is non-volatile memory associated with persistent instructions such as startup firmware in the simplified model. Traditional ROM is not rewritten during ordinary program execution. Modern firmware is commonly stored in rewritable non-volatile flash, so “firmware” does not necessarily mean a physically unchangeable chip. Both RAM and ROM can appear in embedded devices, with different roles.
In OCR’s clarification, virtual storage is storage presented to the user while the physical data are located elsewhere, for example on a network server or cloud service. A mounted remote drive may look like another folder or drive even though reads and writes depend on a connection and a remote system.
This can support access from several devices, shared management and capacity that can be expanded centrally. The user-facing abstraction hides physical placement, but does not remove the underlying hardware, ownership or costs. Virtual storage is distinct from virtual memory, where a process address space is managed using RAM and potentially secondary storage. Neither term means unlimited physical RAM.
Remote storage introduces network latency, bandwidth limits and dependence on service availability. Local caching or synchronisation may allow some offline work, but a local copy can become stale and simultaneous edits need a conflict policy. Ask whether the scenario needs immediate shared access, offline availability, version history or centrally controlled permissions.
A synchronised folder is not automatically a complete backup: deletion or corruption might also synchronise. Encryption in transit, access control, retention and recovery procedures address different requirements. For a device that must operate without a network, essential local data need an appropriate local provision even if longer-term records are uploaded later.
| Resource | Location or behaviour | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Main RAM | Local, volatile working memory | Active instructions and data |
| ROM/firmware storage | Non-volatile persistent instructions | Startup or embedded control |
| Virtual storage | Presented abstraction over remote storage | Shared or remotely accessible files |
| Virtual memory | Managed process address space | Memory allocation and protection |
Attempt the task before opening its worked response. Record each change of state, explain the rule used, and check the result against the original requirements. Code examples labelled Python 3 use that language’s conventions; pseudocode states its own assumptions.
