A function is a rule that turns an input into an output. Writing names the rule , so means "put 4 into the rule", giving 11. AQA Higher papers use function notation to ask for outputs, solve equations, combine functions and reverse them.
The big picture
Think of a function as a machine. A feeds the output of one machine straight into another; an runs a machine backwards to recover the input.
The notation is compact, and most errors come from reading it the wrong way round. means apply first, then — the function nearest the acts first.

You can substitute expressions as well: .
Solving means finding the input: , so .
. Solve .
means : apply , then apply to the result.
With and : , but . Order matters.
and . Find .
Tip — Replace every in the outer function with the whole inner expression in brackets.
The inverse reverses : if then .
Method: write , rearrange to make the subject, then swap for .

Type it like (4 - x)/3.
Composing a function with its inverse gets you back where you started: . That makes a quick check — substitute one value into , then into .
